This is maybe the most interesting expression of Laphroaig we've ever carried and it's a whisky that should appeal the ultimate Islay connoisseur. The 19 years in Hogshead have mellowed the medicinal and peaty nature of Laphroaig without completely taming it. The first nosing reveals white pepper and spices, but the peat isn't quite apparent. It isn't until the initial sip that the smoke makes its way forward and the traditional flavors of peat, seaweed, and iodine come strolling to the front. However, they are supported by the richness of barrel aging - hazelnuts, subtle hints of vanilla and malty texture that seems almost surreal. The whisky is bottled at cask strength so nothing is dilluted or washed out. This is mature Laphroig that wows you with its complexity and balance, rather than its power and peat. One of the best whiskies we carry at the moment, hands down. -David Driscoll, K&L Spirits Buyer
