2006 Umathum "Frauenkirchen vom Stein" St. Laurent Burganland
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The Umathum 2006 St. Laurent - vinified in tank and then matured in fuder - (displays) the black cherry fruit, humus-like notes, and polished texture that typify many of the better wines of this variety. Herbal, rose hip, and stony notes chime in on a satisfyingly lingering finish of a wine suited for 2-3 years of bottle evolution.
The oldest vineyard in the villages of Frauenkirchen, "vom Stein" has light and permeable soils full of gravel and quartz. The wine spends 15 months in barrels, and is bottled without filtration. Dark red, with aromas of cherries and citrus peel and hints of savory spices and woody herbs, the palate is full of spiced cherry, dense blackberry and clove with a dense finish of silky tannins. A fantastic match for game and roasted lamb dishes. 12.5% abv.
