Brouwerij De Ranke "HOP Flower Power" Belgian Pale Ale, Belgium 750ml (Previously $16)
The De Ranke brewery was founded by two good friends, Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos. Their story is a classic in Belgium, where the very best craft brewing usually begins as a passionately pursued hobby, not an occupation. For Nino and Guido, brewing is literally a weekend obsession. For a few hours on Friday and Saturday, every week, the marvelous turn-of-the-century Deca Brewery in West Flanders is turned over to the De Ranke brewers, who make small batches of what many consider the best specialty beers of Belgium. Their beers are robust and flavorful, and famous for their massive hoppiness, which comes from the best Hallertau and Brewer’s Gold varieties. This limited edition beer was made by 'wet-hopping,' which is the addition of fresh hops right from the fields that haven't been dried, as hops normally are. This is Belgium's first ever wet-hopped beer. It is made with Brewer's Gold and Challenger hops for bittering, and Saaz and Mittelfrüh for aroma. The hops added "wet" were also Mittelfrüh. They were picked in early September and tossed into the brew kettle hours later, on September 4th. The first thing you'll notice is a very green, herbal, almost stinging hop wallop. That's the flavor of perfectly fresh Hallertauer hops. Refreshing and BITTER!
