This wine, from accomplished Zin expert Joel Gott, showed up a few years ago in many stores retailing for around 10bucks, which was still a great buy, but at $5.99 today it's almost a "license" to steal without resorting to cheap clown masks or badly-scrawled ransom notes. This tasty Zinfandel blend, sourced from select vineyards throughout the state, reveals signature brambly fruit and spices, the perfect enjoyable wine to complement hot-out-of-the-oven New York-style pizza and a good flick on a rainy Wednesday night.

Maybe I got a bad bottle but this was close to the worst bottle of wine I have ever purchased, and certainly the worst from K&L.

Plenty good for $5.99. Not as full as I like, but way more than I expect for price. Good flavors. Great for a bbq, not bad indoors either!

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
