A consistently well-made cru bourgeois, this wine exhibits a deep ruby color and a nice, earthy nose with hints of burning embers intermixed with black fruits, herbs, and spice. The wine displays moderate tannin, medium body, good length and ripeness. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. (8/ 2008)

This is my affordable steak wine. Now, while I am not a high roller. If I am going to spend money on a great NY strip. The wine hold's up it's end of the bargain. Great acid and silky tannins. Matches perfectly with the steak.

Here you have an over achieving Chateau coupled with the outstanding 2005 Bordeaux vintage resulting in amazing value. This is dark in color and deep in fruit with hints of earth, savory herb, spice and a touch of smoke. The wine is quite full bodied with a meaty texture and ripe, silky tannin. Decant now or age another 5 years.

Great example of the fantastic 2005 vintage. The Verdignan it is showing those classic notes of black currants, cedar, touch of cigar box and even some floral notes. Old school yet approachable. It needs a bit of debating to bring its magic out. Very good value and very good wine.

Newly arrived and purchased directly from the chateau. We currently have several vintages of this moderately priced Haut Medoc in stock. This 2005 is one of my favorites. The nose has some lovely floral and spice notes, and a little bit of old school Bordeaux funk no doubt originating from some of the older barrels in the cellar. When first opened some of that character is evident on the palate but quickly dissipates. An hour or so in the decanter brings out the characteristic ’05 fruit – dark, rich and ripe with classic black currant and cassis notes. Great structure here with good acidity and tannins that are initially quite firm. Drinkable now but ought to even better with another 3 to 5 years in the cellar.

This wine is a great cellar candidate with its mineral, licorice and toasty oak aromas. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a lingering finish. Very well balanced and generous with lots of fruit underneath. Must decant an hour if you want to drink it now.

A strong and complex wine with very deep, blood red fruit. Spicy wit hints of earth and heavily toasted oak. This is a masculine style of wine that could use a few more years to soften up.

So the wines from Verdignan have become popular with customers for price to quality. The 2005 is a bit tight so needs some decanting. Dark fruit on the nose and palate is surrounded by toasty oak aromas. Decant and have with dinner or cellar for a few more years.

As the many fans of Verdignan know, this old-school Bordeaux needs a little age to really show its best. Give this fantastic 05 a good vigorous decant or enjoy it over a few evenings for a very rewarding drink!

Took this on a overnight fishing trip with friends and thought several times through the day how terrific this would taste after the fish and I were cleaned and cooled down. I was disappointed when I opened the bottle. finding the wine to be musty and tannic. So I passed happy hour with a cold beer while I let the bottle breathe and the glass sit, hoping time and air would do something miraculous. Just before dinner I took a sip to discover this wine had smoothed out and was tasting very good. It continued improving through the evening. This is a terrific Bordeaux for the money; you will enjoy it very much if you have the patience to decant it for at least an hour or two before serving.

I agree with Susan. Open the bottle a day before you want to drink it and a lot of the tannins will be smoothed out.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
