 The 2005 Grenache Romas Vineyard delivers more complexity than the Onkaparinga, both aromatically and on the palate. An enticing perfume of damp earth, truffle, clove, black cherry, and blackberry is followed by a full-bodied, powerful, structured wine which will need a decade to reveal its full potential. Although it oozes with fruit and can be enjoyed now, it merits extended cellaring.  (10/ 2007)

 Saturated ruby. Room-filling aromas of strawberry preserves, raspberry, kirsch, Asian spices and floral oils. Densely packed red and dark berry flavors are framed by supple tannins but seem to overwhelm them, with a sweet vanilla bean quality adding further complexity. Finishes with outstanding depth, precision and length, leaving palate-staining raspberry in its wake. What the hell do you serve this with, and does it matter?  (10/ 2007)

 *Cellar Selection* The most full-bodied and richly textured of the 2005 Grenaches from Clarendon Hills is the Romas. Its blackberry, chocolate and dried-spice flavors come at you in plush waves, showing great persistence on the finish. Very aromatic with crushed flowers, blackberry liqueur, vanilla pod and Star Anise. A beautifully saturated palate with blackcurrant, cassis and rich sandalwood and Asian spices. The mouth feel is dense but not too extracted; the wine feels supple and pure on the palate. The tannins have become very elegant and fine after 7 long years in the bottle that have given this wine the final polish it required in its youth. This is pure power and concentration but also very classy, stylish and defined. Drinking beautifully right now but undoubtedly will go on like this for another 5+ years. I would have paid the $90 for a bottle but at this price I guess I can afford two or three!

A huge step up from the previously offered 2005 Clarendon Hills wines the 2005 Clarendon Hills Romas Grenache epitomizes the best of the best when it comes to single-vineyard Grenache in Australia. The Romas comes from the steepest part of the Blewitt Springs vineyard which gives the wine a refined feel and laser-beam focused fruit along with amazing structure and length. The Romas has alluring aromas of black plum and black cherry fruit with subtle hints of spice and earth while on the palate the wine displays remarkable vibrancy with juicy, mouthwatering red and black fruit flavors. The wine displays great structure and body with layer upon layer of complex flavors and a long seductive finish. This is a screaming deal for a wine that usually sells for more than double the price we are offering it for.

- Fat, ripe and rich with ample fruit and vibrant acidity, wines made from Grenache are easy to love. While its origins are still under dispute - some suggest Spain, where it is called Garnacha, while others say it came first from Sardinia, where it is called Cannonau - it is inarguably one of the most planted varietals in the world. A hearty grape, Grenache does well in hot, dry regions and its sturdy stalk also makes it well-suited to withstand blustery conditions like the Provençal Mistral. It ripens at relatively high sugar levels, which translates to higher potential alcohol in the wines it produces. Grenache may be most famous in the Southern Rhône areas such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas where it has long been an important component of delicious blends. But it's also the source of the crisp rosés from Tavel, Lirac and Provence, and age-worthy vins doux naturels like Rivsaltes and Banyuls. Grenache is also found in large swaths of northeastern Spain, in Navarre, in Rioja, where it plays a supporting role in blends with Tempranillo, and in the distinctive wines of Priorat. The grape was once the most widely planted varietal in Australia, though Shiraz and Cabernet have overtaken it. In California, Grenache plantings have dwindled from their heyday in the San Joaquin Valley, but it is starting to see a resurgence, albeit in smaller plantings, where other Rhône varietals thrive.

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since.
