I tend to shy away from those over-the-top, high alcohol, heavily oaked domestic wines, regardless of how many points they are awarded. And that's why I enjoyed this Cabernet. It drinks so well with food or simply by itself upon arriving home from work.

Amplio comes in with a very solid performance for an everyday drinking cab. Warm fruit is wrapped up in luscious oak with complexity that normally isn’t seen at this price point.

There is not too much of this beauty left so don't wait or you may lose out. This is from the same folks who gave us the great selling Redart blend and this is even better. Balanced, elegant and a shade less ripe than most Cabs at this price level. Only 13.5% alcohol keeps this very fresh. Try it.....

A balanced, delicious, food-friendly Cabernet for a great price. Luis Moya's (Urbanite Cellars) 06 Amplio is lower in alcohol and slightly lighter bodied than the typical big, rich, fruit-bomb style many have come to associtate with California Cab. Something new to add to your party wine repertoire!

Fans of the Redart take note! Another winner from Luis Moya. In Spanish "amplio" means rich, abundant, substantial, and this wine is nothing if not that. Big, expansive, generous fruit with sweet, ripe cherry notes. And at an everyday price that's easy on the wallet. Full-bodied and lushly textured with soft tannins at a mere 13.5% alcohol, this is an easy drinking California Cab that won't break the budget. Try a bottle tonight. Come back for a case tomorrow.

The reviews appear to be way ahead of the reality. I went in optimistic-- because I think Luis Moya is providing a valuable service.

I didn't love it. Some good flavors, but "tinny" throughout the bottle. Never opened up.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
