Port Ellen whiskies are just going to keep getting rarer and more expensive. This old-fashioned whisky is beginning to show its age, but is still holding up nicely. It’s clean, with no excessive oak, and a soft, sweet maltiness for balance. Earthy and rooty at times, with tarry rope, beach pebbles, leafy smoke, bourbon barrel char, black licorice, lemon peel, and hints of shellfish and diesel fumes (like following a boat in the ocean). Long, smoky, lightly briny finish.
This Port Ellen 30 year old single malt Islay Scotch whisky comes from the importer's finite and declining stocks of Port Ellen, which sadly closed in 1983. It was distilled in 1979 and aged for 30 years in refill American oak casks and then bottled at its natural cask strength of 57% ABV in 2009. It is the ninth annual release from Diageo, and only the second Port Ellen 30 year old to come from the distillers. It is a limited edition of only 5916 individually-numbered bottles
