We met Dario Sciolla for the first time in Piedmont a few years ago and were very impressed with his wines. He hails from a little town called Bastia Mondově about 16 miles south of Barolo in dolcetto country. Dario's family has been growing grapes here for generations, the vineyards surround the family home but Dario was the first to bottle wine. His winery is about as big as your garage, ok maybe slightly bigger, but his was built around the time Columbus was dodging hurricanes in the Caribbean. In the mouth the wine is lush; it rolls across your palate, with layers of black fruit flavors. This is a food wine if ever there was one, and it goes with everything from meat and cheese filled pastas to roast fowl, lamb chops on the grill, you name it!

I love Dolcetto...when it's done right. This baby is from Dogliani which is the "land of Dolcetto". Broad, rich and lush with some great black fruit flavors. The tannins are there but they're fairly integrated. Have this one with food and it will make you happy happy.

This is Dolcetto di Dogliani country where dolcetto is King! Dario’s Sciolla family has been growing grapes here for generations. His winery is about as big as your garage so he is a real garagiste. Gambero Rosso, Italy’s premier wine critics, have given his wines great scores. The 2007 Bricco del Cucù Dolcetto di Dogliani got 2 out of 3 glasses (3 being the highest) and got a nod (an *) as having a great price to quality ratio. I love the fruit; it has of a chocolatey character to it, ripe and full but still imbued with spice. Lots of color, excellent balance and depth.

my friend Max from (La Ghersa winery) introduced us to his friend Dario Sciolla from Dogliani and we were very glad to meet him and his wines. I gave this two stars ** Here is a little party for your month, blackberries, cassis, there are hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, lots of minerals, love the tannin structure as well as the looong finish.

I like this wine, its a beautiful color and has an interesting flavor profile but really needs food. With food its great, without food not so much.

Dolcetto

- How could you not love a great with a name that means "little sweet one?" But don't let that deceive you. This varietal, grown in Italy's Piedmont, may be a low-acid, fruit-forward red, but it can also have significant tannic structure, particularly those from the Dogliani DOC. Traditionally vinified dry, wines made from Dolcetto tend to have a sweet edge to them, with ripe red fruit flavors and perfumed bouquets. According to the Oxford Companion to Wine, many producers have learned to manage its tannic edge with shorter fermentation. There are a total of seven DOCs that produce Dolcetto: Dolcetto d'Aqui, Dolcetto d'Asti, Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba, Dolcetto delle Langhe Monregalesi, Dolcetto di Dolgiani, Dolcetto di Ovada and Dolcetto d'Alba. Dolcetto is also grown in the Italy's Liguria where it is called Ormeasco.

Piedmont

- Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.
