92 points Robert Parker: "The dark plum/ruby-hued, seductive 2006 Sangiovese exhibits notes of sweet cigar tobacco intermixed with plums, balsamic, strawberries, and black cherries. Round, generous, medium to full-bodied, and disarming, it should be consumed over the next 4-6 years." (12/09) And, from Wine Spectator: "Appealing smoky plum aromas lead to distinctive cherry and chocolate flavors, finishing with notes of caramel and spice. Drink now through 2014." Altamura's estate vineyards in Napa Valley produce the majority (85%) of the Sangiovese grapes for this wine. They’re located on Altamura’s property in an area known as Wooden Valley. At elevations of 700 to 1000 feet, the soils here are varied and carry the same distinguished traits found in other areas of Napa Valley; some soils are similar to the Rutherford Bench, yet others are like the mountainous regions of Mount Veeder and Howell Mountain. Altamura’s estate vineyards bring these characteristics together in a hallmark style of luscious, many-layered Sangiovese. Always one of California's finest Sangioveses, this 2006 is full of spice and rich red cherry fruit with ample tannins and a savory finish.
