2005 Domaine de Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Elsewhere $40)

SKU #1051706

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Reasonably priced for a Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the 2005 Vieux Lazaret displays lovely kirsch aromas balanced by subtle spice, remarkably pure fruit flavors and a rich, creamy texture. This full-bodied effort is drinking well now, and should continue to do so for at least 10 years." (12/31/08) 90 points Stephen Tanzer: "Medium red. Gently spicy, red berry-dominated bouquet suggests dried lavender, anise and rose. This is awfully seductive already but at the same time attractively understated. Juicy raspberry and cherry flavors are gently firmed by silky tannins, which add subtle grip to the long, sweet finish." (Jan/Feb 2008) According to Robert Parker: "The slightly darker colored 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is cut from the same mold as the 2006, with impressive raspberry, blackberry, and sweet cherry notes intermixed with spring flowers, licorice, and some loamy soil notes. It is full-bodied, has lush texture, decent acidity, and very ripe tannin, which is a good sign in this vintage. Drink it over the next 10-12 years." (10/07)

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
