The folks at Joseph Carr live for Cab. It is their passion and it is their signature. They approach their winemaking with the spirit of the Bordelais, making a Cab in the style of a Left Blank blend with some Napa flair. 85% Cab, 10% Merlot and 5% Cab Franc aged for 20-22 months in a combination of new and used French and American oak. Smoky and sweet from the get-go, with hints of cassis and saddle leather that carry over to the palate. Complementary notes of plum and spice with soft tannins make this a compelling wine now and one to enjoy well into the future.

On the nose, violets and blackcurrant. Tart blackberry notes in the mouth. Fruit is ripe and sweet with good acidity for balance. Finishes with soft tannins. Great by itself or with food. All Napa fruit for less than $20. Superb value in a CA Cab!

This is my new favorite Cabernet for $20 and under in the store. Joseph Carr started this label in 2005 as a negociant. The 2006 Napa Cabernet is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, all from Napa Valley's top vineyards. Lots of California ripe and fleshy fruit and a bit of smoke, with good structure and elegant tannins. There is a lot of wine here for only $19.99.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
