2002 Marguet Pere et Fils Grand Cru Brut Champagne

SKU #1050641

94 points from Burghound: "A presently restrained but beautifully complex and classy nose where the chardonnay aromas definitely are in evidence leads to pure, intense, detailed and equally complex flavors have just the right amount of effervescence and a fine bead. This is a seriously lovely effort and it’s one of the rare examples that, even though it is quite young, can be enjoyed now or held for up to another decade. 94/2012+" K&L's notes: "This is a very exciting 2002, and one that no serious fan of Champagne should miss. The blend is 70 % Chardonnay and 30 % Pinot Noir from old vines that Benoit sourced from grand cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. The wine is aged in the bottle on the yeast for more than 5 years. It has excellent balance and surprising power- tasting it blind I guessed that it had more than 50% Pinot Noir. It has fantastic black cherry Pinot Noir fruit, savory intrigue and quite a lot of minerality on the extremely long finish. This Champagne is one of the strongest finishers of any of our stock, with a real "peacock tail" that is almost stronger after swallowing it than when it sits on ones tongue. The 2002 should age effortlessly well past 2012. -Gary Westby, K&L

This is an absolute value for a remarkable year in recent vintage champagne. I plan on purchasing a case to cellar and opening a bottle with each year to see how it evolves (assuming it lasts that long). If 8 years in the bottle after 5 years on the lees is any inclination, this should mature into an even more elegant wine given even just two more years.

Marguet Pere has been one of our best direct import Champagne houses for years. 70% chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, all Grand Cru fruit. Crisp and clean with a great weight in the mid palate. Dark cherry, minerality and beautiful, small tight bubbles. A pure pleasure.

The first word that comes to mind in reference to the 2002 Marguet Brut Champagne is elegance. This wine has a lot of finesse and complexity that makes it a pleasure to drink. The 2002 Marguet is dry and clean with slight sublte toasty flavors. The Marguet Rose has always been very popular at K&L and the 2002 vintage Marguet Brut should also please fans of the Rose.

Benoit has done it again! Another great release for this 2002 vintage with a lot dusty cherry fruit and minerality. Like Gary Westby, I expected that it had a much higher percentage of pinot noir in it.It starts out lush on the palate with cherries, vanilla and spice. Nice minerality on finish with a bit of Kaffir lime and nectarine. Delicious! A Wine Club selection for October.
