2003 Sean Thackrey "Aquila" Eaglepoint Ranch Mendocino Sangiovese

SKU #1050467

92 points Robert Parker: "Thackery's detour with the stubborn and largely unsuccessful Sangiovese grape in California is the gorgeous 2003 Aquila, which comes from the Eaglepoint Ranch in Medocino. Dark plum/garnet ruby, with a stunning nose of sweet kirsch intermixed with currants, fig, plum, and underbrush, the wine exhibits plenty of earthy, cedary, spice box notes, it has a good bit of glycerin and body as well as a silky, sumptuous finish. This is as good as Sangiovese can get in California. Drink it over the next 5-8 years." (08/09) ETA: Sept 18th 2009.

This is a singular California sangiovese. I doesn't bear much resemblance to other California sangioveses (which is perhaps a good thing), or its Italian forebears; it tastes and smells most strongly like a Thackrey Sangiovese. The nose is pungently mentholyptus. Underneath that is a medium bodied wine with meaty and dry cherry flavors and dry, dustily herbaceous, peppery accents. The tannins are modest, lightly tooth coating, and the wine has enough acidity to make it food friendly without being obvious. This is one to enjoy now.

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
