Bacchant Wines, the title of the collaboration between Master Sommelier Sara Floyd and the Pisoni family, bring you this incredibly tasty and wildly affordable Pinot Noir. From fruit sourced through the Pisoni family's deep connections in the Santa Lucia Highlands and made by Jeff Pisoni, the winemaker for Lucia, this is one Pinot this season that can't miss. The densely fruited nose is packed with red cherry and framboise tones, all the while a subtle lace of black pepper runs through the aromatics of the wine. On entry the wines comes of as ripe, yet it has a refreshing tang to the red fruits that are so abundant here. Pitchy in the mouth, this has plenty of weight for the fans of heavier Pinots, but it also has enough tartness to keep this feeling alive and electric on the tongue. Bottom line, this is a steal for less than $20 (Bryan Brick, K&L) The Luli label is a project created by the Pisoni family (Lucia, Garys' Vineyard) and Master Sommelier Sara Floyd. Sourced from sustainbaly farmed vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, this wine is a showcase for cool climate fruit. Fermented using native yeasts with only 20% new French oak, the 2008 Luli Pinot is fresh and bright, with strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors, supple tannins, ebullient acidity and a bit of spice.

While I am not generally a big fan of heavy California wines, there is something about the Luli to love. One of the best things about the wine are on the nose. Bright cherries and framboise. Very pretty! On the palate, dense red fruits and spicy undertones. While this is a weighty wine, it is a wine that has enough balance and tartness to make it stand out. All in all, this wine should appeal to just about anyone.

This wine shows remarkable balance and breeding. Though a richer style, with deep concentration of color, more intense aromatics of ripe red fruit, cedar, and a touch of oak spice, acidity keeps everything in check and the overall effect is lifted, not heavy. Dusty tannins add texture to a substantial core of fruit. Pretty serious stuff for under $20!

The Pisoni family and good Pinot go hand in hand, and so it's no surprise that this Pinot is a good one. A nice vibrant color on this one, with a nose filled with tart, spicy cherries. More tart cherries once it hits the tongue with strawberries and a pinch of nutmeg and pumpkin spice as it goes into a nice, gentle finish. Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.
