This Gaglioppo-based red is a traditional, strapping, rustic wine with an intense and persistent bouquet of exotic spice and deep, dark fruit. Dry, warm and firmly tannic, it is well-balanced and made for large-scale cuisine like lamb chops with green olives and spicy red pepper.

Calabria isn't well known as an important winemaking region, but if there are more wines like this one from the toe of the boot, it will rocket to stardom! The Ciro, made from the almost unknown Gaglioppo grape, is supple in the mouth and elegant, with layers of delicate, complex fruit. It feels more like a California Pinot Noir but without the higher alcohol. Wonderfully balanced, fragrant and a pleasure to drink.

This is my first introduction to Ciro and the grape Gaglioppo and I have to say I am a fan. The first thing I noticed was the decent acidity which is something I didn't expect in a wine from Calabria. An elegant nose of cherry, spice and slightly floral. On the palate the wine showed medium body with elegant cherry fruit and a nice earthy finish. All this for only $12.99 and now I just need to find some Bucatini all'Amatriciana and I'll be set.

I have been waiting for K & L to carry a Ciro for a while. One of the most famous wines from Calabria. Made from Gaglioppo this is a medium bodied wine with dark earthy berry tones and modest acidity. Try this with cured meats the region is famous for its Capicola and pancetta. Pair with an entre, think braciole!
