2007 Domaine Courtois "La Grange" Vinsobres

Vinsobres, is a newly created appellation located at the northern end of the Southern Rhone. Here, the noble syrah grape excels, as a cooler mesoclimate allows the varietal to ripen more slowly and retain excellent levels of acidity. Think of Vinsobres as the best of the northern and southern Rhone. The 2007 "La Grange" from Domaine Courtois is composed of 60% grenache and 40% syrah from south-east facing vineyards at 400 meter altitude. Medium+ bodied with effusive notes of blackcurrant, cherry, mineral and cool shiso mint are balanced by super fine tannins and buoyant acidity keep this plush wine fresh and interesting. Try it with vegetarian moussaka or braised beef short ribs. 13.5% abv.

This round, rich Rhone wine is priced for Tuesday night drinking and a very rewarding bottle. It has lavender and black berry fruit on the nose and quite a bit of substance and weight on the palate. Get your grill fired up and pop one of these open!

I am late in the game in getting to know this wine, primarly because I have been so swept up in the avalanche of 2007 Rhone wines that it's just taken me this long to come around to tasting it. We have a number of stunners in the $10-$15 price range from the Rhone, but this little Vinsobres, which features a bit more Syrah (%40) in the blend than your standard Cote-du-Rhones (which are more Grenache-driven), really stands out to me. The Syrah adds smokey and leathery aromas and flavors to the ripe Grenache fruit, and I really like that. Vinsobres is slightly cooler region in the Southern Rhone, so we have more pronounced earthiness and minerality, particularly on the finish, which is quite long. This is a ripe but structured wine that benefits from air time and needs food, for sure, and by comparison is one of the more distinctive and interesting Rhone reds currently in stock at this price.

A lovely wine with loads of blackcurrant fruit and fresh minerality. An exceedingly pleasant wine that is a great match for grilled foods.

A wine that's just right for those without the patience to wait for a more serious Châteauneuf. I'm not saying this is Châteauneuf, it is not. However, for the price, it is the closest thing to it.

Vinsobres is an appellation located between the Northern and Southern Rhone and as such tends to display qualities of both. This blend of 60% Grenache (S. Rhone) and 40% Syrah (N. Rhone) has the juicy, spice common in the South as well as the darker more brooding character common in the North. Since it is cooler here than in the S. Rhone the Syrah ripens more slowly and retains greater acidity. This shows blackcurrant, cherry, mineral and a touch of mint with fine tannin and great acidity. FRESH AND AFFORDABLE.

Killer wine for the money! Tough to find a better deal in '07 Rhone than this baby.

An OK food wine, but it's not that smooth. Good flavors, but the mineral bite was too much for me.
