2006 Storybook Eastern Exposures Napa Zin With its richly-expressive, protean profile of cracked pepper, ripe blackberries, dense plums, wild brambles, tarry spice and sweet earth, this incomparable Napa Zinfandel achieves near perfect pitch and rewrites all the rules for this popular California varietal. I felt that the 2005 vintage was the finest bottle of zinfandel I'd tasted in many a year, not likely to be soon challenged— well, I humbly admit I was proved wrong. If you cherish great zin, do yourself the rare pleasure of savoring and experiencing this stunning, mercurial wine over the next decade.

I bought this one on the advice of John Majeski at the SF store, and greatful that I did. A library-class zinfandel, and one of the few. The 2006 is clearly an outstanding wine, but barely showing its greatness now. I will open another bottle in about 18 months from now and see where we're at.

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
