Palmina is made by Steve Clifton of the famed Brewer-Clifton partnership with Melville's Greg Brewer, and it is entirely devoted to Italian varietals grown in Santa Barbara County. This a flinty, citrusy style Pinot Grigio made from fruit that comes from Alisos, Honea and Hbbits vineyards. It is firm, with a nice acidic backbone to keep the fruit from overpowering. Enjoy with a fruit galette on the back patio or an Italian style potato salad with sun gold tomatoes, oil-cured olives, red onion, capers and anchovies.

Palmina is one of the best new world producers working with Italian varietals. This Pinot Grigio is a dead ringer for its northern Italian cousins, with lemon and minerals on the nose, snappy acidity and an unctuous, tangy finish. A perfect refreshment year round, but especially nice on a hot summer day.

Pinot Gris

- Also known as Pinot Gris in France, where it originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir. The berries can vary in color from yellowish to bluish-violet producing wines that range from white to slightly pink. The most successful wines from the grape come from the Collio in Friuli (Northeast Italy), where the wines are light- to medium-bodied, crisp, dry and, because of their high acidity, complementary to the region's foods like speck, Prosciutto di San Daniele and polenta. In Alsace, where the grape takes a back seat to more popular varietals like Gewürztraminer and Riesling, it is generally rich and honeyed. Other successful plantings of Pinot Grigio exist in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Romania, with even smaller amounts planted in British Columbia, Australia, New Zealand and California.

- Santa Maria and Sants Inez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, chardonnay and pinot noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
