1998 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Gran Reserva Rosado Rioja

SKU #1049131

Lopez de Heredia does not produce a rosado every year! The crop of their Tondonia vineyard was reduced in 1998 due to April springtime frosts. But hot temperatures, low rainfall, and a dry and sunny September resulted in terrific quality grapes. Amazingly complex, this fascinating 12 year-old rosé has a fine, straw-orange color and a "vineux" bouquet. Fresh, fruity, with hints of bitter almonds and hazelnuts, this wine has refined, supple flavors that endure. 60% Garnacha (Grenache), 30% Tempranillo, 10% Viura.

The 1997 Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Gran Reserva Rosado has an earthy, developing nose, at first showing green olive notes, that leads to a palate that is marked by savory, mushroomy flavors and just the barest hint of dried strawberry. Alex mentioned rhubarb in our tasting and that may be a better descriptor - earthy, red fruit. The palate is round and viscous, with medium, fresh acid and a long, savory finish that is almost breadlike in its leesy flavors. I LOVE this wine. It is not what many people look for or expect in a rosé - mature and savory versus young, fruity, and fresh - but with a little fanfare and enthusiasm on part of the host(ess), anyone who loves wine can be won over, or at least come to appreciate, it's remarkable complexity, nuance, and distinction.

While this savory, hazelnut scented rose will be to complex and vinous for many typical rose occasions, it deserves the attention of all fans of mature wine. If you love vintage rose Champagne the Tondonia Gran Reserva Rosado is an absolute must-try bottle. Lopez De Heredia has fit an encyclopedia of complexity in this bottle but without making the wine heavy. This will make a great partner with charcuterie, especially Jamon Iberico!

Calling this wine "unique" does not give it justice. This is an unheard of aged rose. The bouquet hints of sweetness, but this wine is quite dry on the palate. Definitely worth a try.
