Jean-Louis Denois is considered by many as a maverick of the Languedoc. This passionate vigneron produces an impressive portfolio of wines from Limoux, considered one of the coolest regions in the Languedoc. The Denois philosophy is simple. To showcase Limoux as an island of freshness in the south of France. Finding the perfect balance between ripeness and acidity here is key, and Denois manages to maintain this across the board. The 2007 St. Louis is the inaugural vintage of this wine, with Syrah sourced from vineyards located near Caudies-de-Fenouilledes, located between Carcassonne and Perpignan. More reminiscent of an elegant Crozes-Hermitage than a southern french syrah, the 2007 Saint Louis is undoubtedly one of the best values going for syrah right now. Deep, purple and violet notes are complemented by blackberry and a subtle undercurrent of savory-ness that will keep you coming back for another sip. Enjoy with grilled chicken breast and a side of mushroom ragout. 13.5% abv.

Throw another lamb chop on the grill! This is the wine to wash it down with. This sophisticated Syrah is much drier and complex than its price would suggest, but that does not mean that it can't party with you. The mocha and white pepper nose is followed up by a solid mid palate of savory black fruit. The Denois has excellent persistence - the finish is one of its best features. Dare to pour something really good for your next crowd... You can afford it!

The 2007 Saint Louis syrah reminds me of one thing. Crozes Hermitage. Plush berry fruits, matched by just a hint of lavender and wet stone make this syrah one that I recommend most often to customers looking for a more elegant, yet modestly priced rendition of this varietal. My latest succesful encountere with this wine involved a selection of cheeses, tapenade on grilled bread, and several slices of pissaladerie (Nicoise, olive, onion and anchovy pizza). Delicious!

Ripe red fruit and whiffs of cinnamon and spice lure you into this super-drinkable Syrah. Just a touch of oak adds chocalate nuances. The palate is balanced, with red and black fruit and smokey flavors balanced by nice acidity. A refreshing alternative to the super-ripe, jammy syrahs of the new world, and not as dark and brooding (or expensive) as many syrahs from the Northern Rhone. Drink and enjoy.

Shiraz/Syrah

- One of France's noblest black grape varieties, Syrah is known for its intense and distinctive perfume reminiscent of briar fruit, tar, spice and black pepper and its firm structure. One of few black grape varietals frequently vinified on its own, the best examples of Syrah come from the Northern Rhône, particularly Hermitage, but also Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph. These wines are very astringent in their youth, though some Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph can be enjoyed young, relatively speaking. Given the requisite patience, though, these wines can reveal amazing complexity and secondary fruit characteristics like plum and blackcurrant as well as subtle hints of smoke and flowers. In the Southern Rhône, Syrah is used to add structure and complexity to wines dominated by Grenache and complemented by Mourvèdre, like the more immediately drinkable Côte du Rhônes, as well as the long-lived wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In recent years, plantings of Syrah have spread throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon where it is produced on its own or blended with other varietals. Outside of France, the most important Syrah growing country is easily Australia, where it is called Shiraz. Quality levels here depend greatly on yields and geography, and the wines range from bold, fruity and easy-drinking to intense and ageable, like the famed Penfolds Grange. Often bottled on its own, in Australia Syrah is also can be blended with Grenache and Mourvèdre, as in the Southern Rhône, and is increasingly combined with Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah has also been steadily increasing in popularity in California, thanks to a group of advocates called the Rhône Rangers. Its most successful iterations come from the Central and Sonoma Coasts, where winemakers are pushing boundaries and creating some incredible wines. In recent years Syrah has also found a number of proponents in Washington State, which is definitely a region to watch for this variety.
