2006 Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1048596

89 points Wine Spectator: "Muscular but forward, with roasted plum and fig notes backed by braised chestnut and dark tobacco. There's solid grip on the finish. Drink now through 2016." (02/09) 88 points Robert Parker: "The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape has a dark ruby/plum color and a sweet black cherry and currant nose with notes of loamy soil intermixed with a hint of nori (the seaweed wrapper used in sushi restaurants), as well as pepper and lavender. It is very spicy, and that, of course, is a signature of the 2006s. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Chante Cigale deserves slightly more attention than I suspect it gets, but I am not sure it has been as effectively represented in the United States as it could have been." (10/08) 14% abv.

A great wine from a brilliant, young producer- the 2006 cigale showcases this vintage in the southern rhone perfectly. It has a dense, rich core of dark fruit and it is very serious wine: brooding and delicious with a big finish of firm tannins.
Top Value! Drink from 2009 to 2029

I know that the 2007 vintage in the Rhone is all the rage these days, and rightly so. However some of the 2006 Chateauneufs are drinking really well right now. The Chante Cigale is an example of this. With a dark plum color, and a fruit profile of cherries, plums, and cassis. All framed by intense spiciness and minerality. Very approachable and pleasing right now.

Consisting of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and 5% Cincault, this wine is made from from vines averaging 45 years. Getting the opportunity to taste this CNdP with its 23 year old propietor Alexandre Favier, I was completely impressed with how open and accessible this young wine is and how motivated and passionate Alexandre is too. The wine has great full bodied black fruit and a layered, supple palate with hints of kirsch and pepper.

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
