While Ise Kadoya Brewery is only 12 years old, the family-run Kadoya cafe has been serving mochi and tea to the pilgrims that journey to Ise City and Ise Shrine for over 430 years. Kadoya also began making soy sauce, tamari, and miso paste a little over 100 years ago, and the buildings that now house the brewery were once filled with cedar barrels of these traditional Japanese products. The company has been in the Suzuki family for 21 generations; Narihiro Suzuki now runs day-to-day operations. This beer is based on Ise Kadoya's award-winnning Pale Ale recipe, taken to another level by adding "arare" roasted brown rice to create a truly innovative and thoroughly Japanse-style beer. The resulting "genmai" flavored ale gives a refreshingly crisp hoppy flavor and a bitter finish. This recipe even made some Japanese microbrewers stand up and take notice, a true rarity in Japan.
