Toro, located slightly upstream from Ribera del Duero, is known for big, bold fruity reds based on a variation of Tempranillo known as "tinto del pais." Vines are very old in this region, often exceeding 80 years of age. While wines like Termanthia receive big points and critical attention, the Pintia is more elegant, right in line with Vega Sicilia's approach; drink it young for its power and youth, or age - the wine should drink terrifically for at least a decade. This is another ideal way to familiarize yourself with Vega Sicilia's wines without feeling too extravagant. According to Wine Spectator: "Black cherry, coffee and mineral notes mingle in this solid red. There's assertive tannins, but bright acidity provides balances, and the finish is clean and fruity. Drink now through 2014." (11/09)
