1999 Luna Beberide Tinto VdT Castilla y Leon

SKU #1047091

This is an incredibly rare, fully mature, Spanish gem. Produced from the steep, slate, terraced vineyards of Bierzo by Spain's legendary Mariano Garcia (while he was still making wine at Vega Sicilia!), here is a beautiful example of a perfectly aged Spanish wine that has developed quite beautifully in bottle. Produced from 40% Cabernet, 30% Merlot and 30% Mencia, think of it as a supple, balanced, old school styled Bordeaux blend with a Castillian twist. Savory cherry, hints of sage leaf, green and black peppercorn and an unmistakable character of mature Cabernet family aromas (many people liken Mencia to Cabernet Franc, which completes this Graves style blend) make for one gorgeous bottle of wine. And Mariano Garcia made it at the same time he was busy working on Vega Sicilia "Unico," which is a good few hundred dollars more. For fans of good, honest affordable bordeaux and old school California Cabs, this K&L exclusive could be right up your alley.

If you are a fan of Spanish wines and the Mencia grape then buy as much of this wine as you can. This wine is a blend of Mencia, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot all of which are vinified seperatly with native yeasts. The winery lists the wine sees 26 months in 80% New French oak and 20% American oak barrels. First you will notice the dark inky color. Tobacco, dried flowers and a plum on the nose. Rich dark fruit at the center surrounded by astringent tannins and medium acidity with a long cassis finish.

A unique blend that smells like a perfectly-aged bottle of Bordeaux. If were to have blind-tasted this, I would have said Graves or St- Julien. This is earthy, mineral and very nice wine. Subtle flavors of dark fruit, but the earth is what really sells it. This is great stuff and I guarantee I won't be the only staff member to review it.

Tastes very much like a mature Bordeaux, reminded me of the 1997 Langoa Barton. Exceptional value for money.
