Giovanni Blason and his consulting enologist Andrea Rossi have turned this 37-acre property into a juggernaut of affordable quality wines. Giovanni and his wife Valentina own this winery in Gradisca d'Inzonzo, 3.75 miles from the Slovenian border and about 20 miles north of Trieste. Friulano is a classic, this is the Friulian national drink: fresh, crisp with wonderful balance. The locals drink this with, well, they just drink it all the time. On the way to work, morning break, on the way home to lunch, you get the picture. It goes on all day. The Blason Friulano is rich, complex, spicy with hints of tarragon, and mineral with body and balance. A really extraordinary balance of fruit, spice and drinkability. What a gem in our Italian repertoire. I love Friulano and I usually opt for the Ermacora, but this version from Blason is new to the scene is almost as good for five bucks less per bottle. That classic zippiness and fruity aromatic that the most refreshing friulani exhibit is in full effect and a plate of thin sliced salami is definitely in order.

Obviously for $9.99 you're not getting something that will absolutely floor you, but for the price, this is a really nice drinking wine. Great balance of minerality & fruit. It's got texture without going overboard. Paired against something salty like a salumi plate (think "prosciutto"), this is a nice contrast.

K and L should check out other producers in Friuli. Blason is not considered to be one of the best there. I thought the wine was pretty mediocre and unremarkable. On the other hand, there aren`t many Friulanos for 10 USD, so it might be a decent first Friulano for those who are not familiar with them.
