 Bright yellow. Musky peach, pear and apple fruit aromas and flavors are complicated by flowers and herbs. Concentration and precise, with a dusty impression of extract and very good length. Quite strong for this no-malo chardonnay. Bo Barrett is now vinifying with a higher percentage of whole clusters and getting less bitterness as a result. 'So now we don't need as much new oak to compensate' he noted, adding that 2007 was an outstanding vintage for chardonnay as there was no heat stress.  (6/ 2009)

Montelena deserves the spotlight that the movie "Bottle Shock" has shown on it. They have been making some of Napa Valley's best wine for decades. Just like the 1973 vintage in the movie, this 2007 has fantastic white Burgundy-like (or even beating) richness and length. This is a real lobster wine, fit for the most special occasions. They also age spectacularly. Jim Barr and I did a vertical going back all the way to 1979 a few years ago - and the 1979 won!

not quite golden in color...but a bit more than "straw"...

On the nose, I immediately detect a floral sweetness and something that almost reminds me of buttercream icing...extremely complex, and I will admit that I cannot pinpoint everything that is going on here...but I do also get a slight mineraly quality...something like hot stones...

The palate is clean, crisp, and extremely well rounded...Pineapple is immediately detectable, as is green apple (but in no way overly acidic) with just a hint of oak...there is also the same slightly stony quality from the nose...I also get a slight hint of gingerbread...

The finish lingers with a mixture of minerals, vanilla, and just a bit of cinnamon...
