2004 Forefathers Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $35)

But there’s nothing second-rate about the wine. It’s classic Alexander Valley, soft and a little herbal, and rich in cherry, red currant, licorice, sweet vanilla oak and peppery spice flavors. Lovely now, and with the integrity to evolve for a decade." (5/1/2008) This single vineyard, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Nick Goldschmidt was a hit with our staff, especially considering the affordable price tag. Nick has surely paid his dues as a winemaker, working for wineries all over the world, such as Kumeu River (NZ), Caliterra (Chile), Simi and Gary Farrell. That worldly experience shows here in this delicious Cabernet. Full of fresh blueberry, wildflowers, charred wood, anise seed and kirsch on the nose; this is no shrinking violet. Just coming into its prime, this is a perfect time to start drinking this wine. It is remarkably soft and supple, and the time it's had in the bottle has done it well. This is a fruit-driven cab with just enough structure to wrap together the berry-driven juiciness, the spicy tobacco and sandalwood notes and the earthy dusty notes found on the finish.
