2006 d'Aiguilhe, Côtes d'Castillon (Previously $34)

SKU #1045043 90 points Wine Spectator

This shows new wood on the nose, with ripe berry and sweet tobacco. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and firm tannins. Very fresh and racy. Consistently outstanding and always a serious value. Best from 2012 through 2017. (3/ 2009)

89 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Good bright medium ruby. Cassis, licorice, minerals and cedar on the slightly inky nose. Sweet, lush and forward, with a distinctly exotic quality to its dark berry and spicecake flavors. This round, pliant wine is all about mouthcoating fruit. Finishes with serious but nicely ripe tannins and very good length. (5/ 2009)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This consistently high quality estate’s 2006 exhibits aromas of cedar, black currants, black cherries, loamy soil, and background toasty oak. Medium-bodied and richly fruity with sweet tannin, it should drink well for 5-6 years. Good value. (2/ 2009)

Spicy, lively, some oak evident but plenty of ripe fruit. Tannic finish but decant and enjoy or cellar 5 years.

This property has become one of the stars in this exciting appellation and is consistant vintage to vintage. The aromas are very complex with an array of flowers, red fruit and spice. Although rather flashy, this modern wine has a fantastic sense of proportion and maintains great style. This very well made wine combines sweet cherries, hints of tobacco and ripe tannins that are seamless and integrated.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
