There oughta be a law. In the world of wine values, there are DEALS and there are STEALS, and this one should be wearing a ski mask. Penfolds is one the icons of the Australian wine industry producing wines of great character at every level in their range. The Thomas Hyland, which should retail in the mid-teens, is outrageously good at this price. Weighing in at 13.5 ABV and with a few years in the bottle, this is not your over-the-top Aussie Shiraz, but rather a wine of beautiful proportion and elegance. The fruit for this wine is sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and from the cooler Adelaide region. The bouquet is lifted with plum, cherry and blackberry fruits with notes of toffee, earth and spice. On the palate the upfront fruit is warm and juicy with rounded, velvety tannins framed by hints of chocolate. With seamless balance and a lovely long finish, the wine is delicious to drink right now. This is one you want by the case to have as your daily red. (Jim Chanteloup, K&L Aussie buyer)
