2006 Bodega Mendel Malbec Mendoza

SKU #1043997

92 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The entry-level 2006 Malbec was sourced from a 78-year-old estate vineyard, aged for 12 months in 40% new French oak, and bottled without fining or filtration. Purple-colored, it exhibits an impressive nose of wood smoke, tobacco, rose petal, blueberry, and black raspberry. This leads to a medium-bodied wine in which notes of cola, coffee, and caramel emerge on the palate. Elegantly styled, with racy flavors, good balance, and a pure finish, it will evolve for 2-3 years but can be enjoyed now. Mendel’s talented winemaker is Roberto de la Mota of Cheval de los Andes fame." (Dec. 2008) 91 points from Wine Spectator: "Nicely layered with warm fig sauce, mocha, crushed raspberry and boysenberry fruit and a long, dark, spice- and espresso-tinged finish. Powerful but balanced. Should age nicely. Best from 2009 through 2012. 3,500 cases made." (Nov. 15, 2008)

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Malbec

- Red grape variety originally made popular in Bordeaux, where it is still found in some blends. This grape has declined in popularity in many regions because of its susceptibility to downy mildew, rot and frost bite. It seems to have found a good home in the drier Argentina and Chile. It can also be found in some California Meritage and a blending agent. Here is a list of our bestselling Malbec.
Country:

Argentina

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
