2 Glasses Gambero Rosso. Having lost a battle to Hungary both Tokay d'Alsace and Tocai Friulano can no longer use those names. Friuli's national (the Friulan nation) drink is now called Friulano, nothing else has changed. This wine's strength lies within its core - layers of mineral-laden aromatics, a determined center that yields gradually to reveal the soft open heart - and warm, concentrated flavors that give way to a wine rich, balanced, with delicate acidity and scintillating aromas of bitter almonds, apple and ripe pear highlighted by hints of tarragon. The wine has no oak but exceptional balance and a very long finish.

This is the local wine of Friuli, one of the finest areas for white wine production in Italy. The 2007 Ermacora Friulano exhibits notes of honeysuckle and lemon zest on the nose. In the mouth, ripe melon surrounds a firm mineral core balanced by moderate acidity. K&L purchases this wine directly from a small, third-generation family winery. Exceptional quality for the money and a delight to drink.

Often invaded because of its unique proximity to the East, Friuli has indomitably survived and today is a treasured region for incredible Italian whites, the most famous being those made from the native Friulano grape. We're fortunate to carry one of the finest, made by Dario and Luciano Ermacora, a richly aromatic flowerbox of a wine, noted for its persuasive nose of almonds, apples and yeasty bread. Absolutely without oak, for why would anyone play with perfection? Drink this luminous, full-flavored beauty with tarragon-roasted chicken or pork medallions for a sumptuous feast.

I simply love wines from Italy that have seen no oak whatsoever. The Ermacora Friulano bursts with mouthwatering acidity and minerals. But this is not a single layered wine. The fruit starts to shine with apricot, apples and pears. Great for the warm weather ahead. Try it with scallops right off the grill, dabbed with a bit of olive oil on a bit of fresh foccacia.
