Unleash your inner beast then tame it with the powerful, but sophisticated "Mr. Beast" Zinfandel blend (14% sangiovese, 86% primitivo zinfandel) from Barber Cellars. This is a rich, drink-me-with-food kind of red, with lots of red berry fruit, peppery spice and vanilla nuance on the nose and on your tongue. There's also just a hint of Dry Creek Valley dust to keep the fruit from taking over. Vinified in small fermentation bins with two hand punch downs per day and then aged for 10 months on 40% new french and american oak. 180 cases made from a biodynamically farmed vineyard on the valley floor. Two and a half stars, San Francisco Chronicle: "Michael Barber's winery focuses on single-vineyard bottlings, though this wine is from two different vineyard blocks on the Dry Creek Valley floor. Soft and juicy, with raspberry, white pepper and a touch of tomato on the nose. Backed with slightly fleshy notes, the flavors are more elegant than one would suspect. Includes 14 percent Sangiovese; limited production." (01/23/09)
