This wine is ultra-delicate with faint whisperings of stone fruit and barrel flavors. The acidity is crisp and refreshing for drinking today, but I can only imagine what potential this wine has for the future. The minerality sings on the finish and the wine tastes like it costs a 100 bucks. This is a special occasion Chardonnay that will have your dinner guests oohing and ahhing.

Chardonnay

- The white grape of Burgundy, and probably the most familiar name to American consumers. In Burgundy, the name of the grape generally does not appear on the label-only the place where it was grown (e.g. Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, etc.). It is also the grape of Chablis, where it's habit of early ripening puts it at risk for Spring freezes and hailstorms. It is responsive to a wide variety of wine-making techniques, and use in Champagne as well. The American style has often been to put Chardonnay fully through a secondary, malolactic fermentation, producing a wine that is often fat and rich. In Burgundy, by contrast, Chardonnay produces white wines of great power, but also of great acidity and crispness. It usually maintains a high level of alcohol, and the tremendous diversity of Chardonnay winemaking styles across the globe make wines from this grape one the most interesting and popular varietals. France

Burgundy

- The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Côte d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Côte de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Côte de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Côte d'Or. Specific Appellation:

Chassagne Montrachet

- A long, wandering village in the Côte de Beaune. Fortunately, what the workaday village lacks in charm, the wines more than make up for. Most famous for its white wines, which are lovely and delicate, Chassagne-Montrachet actually produces more red than white wine. It is one of the few places in the Côte D'Or where both red and white wines are produced from Premier Cru vineyards. The Grands Crus are Montrachet, Bâtard Montrachet (both shared with the neighboring village of Puligny) and Criots Bâtard Montrachet.
