2002 Nicolas Potel Grand Cru "Bonnes Mares" (Was $140 Elsewhere)

SKU #1043085

(UPDATE - Nov 4th 10:15am - we regret to inform you that this wine just sold out, much faster than we anticipated - we wish we had more - our apologies for not being able to obtain enough bottles to satisfy the demand) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Medium red. Highly complex aromas of sweet raspberry, dill, brown spices, rose petal, menthol, gingerbread and underbrush. Large-scaled and round but not at all overly sweet. A chewy, rather brooding and youthfully clenched Bonnes-Mares that turns sweeter toward the back, finishing with molten tannins and slightly austere hints of licorice and spice." The good news is that this wine was a bit tough in its youth. How is this good news, you ask? Well, it means we're able to find it now, when it's coming out of its slumber and beginning to show lovely Chambolle-like character. Nicolas got this from four different growers, so it really is a cross-section of Bonnes Mares. If you are looking for a Grand Cru Burgundy for a special occasion, but do not want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars, here is a value you shouldn't miss.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Pinot Noir

- The Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in the cooler climate of Burgundy, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne that is used in all of the Côte d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Australia, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success. Here is a list of our bestselling Pinot Noir.
Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Burgundy

- The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Côte d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Côte de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Côte de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Côte d'Or. Also include by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north. View our bestselling Burgundy.
Specific Appellation:

Chambolle Musigny

- A charming village in the Côte de Nuits, north of Clos Vougeot. Mostly red (and very little white) wine from limestone-dominated soil makes the communes' wine silky, with finesse rather than density. The wines are known for their aromatic purity and elegance. The Grands Crus are Musigny and Bonnes Mares.
