Full and slightly fleshy in its palatal impacts but well-balanced and polished, especially given the tendencies of its appellation to produce wines that are often on the rustic side, this one does bring youthful tannins into play at the finish and is recommended for a few years of cellaring in order to see it at its best." (09/08) 91 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine: "A big, brawny, juicy Zin that shows the muscular style of Rockpile, and does so with considerable appeal. With powerhouse flavors of ripe, freshly picked blackberries and currants, sprinkled with anise, cocoa, black pepper, crushed cloves, star anise and vanilla, it finishes completely dry and smooth." (11/1/2008) With aromas of briary blackberry, Hoisin sauce, obsidian stone and smoked pork, this is one roller coaster ride of a Zin. Whole black peppercorns permeate the palate, while creamed puree of wild berry adds the necessary and enjoyable fruit to this wine's mid-palate. At the edges this is surprisingly savory with a subtle herbal tang. Finishing up with more smoke and sweet cassis fruit, this is a wine that perfectly shows why the Zins coming from the Rockpile AVA are so hot right now. (Bryan Brick, K&L)

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
