This is the simplistic, yet delicious, bottling from one of my favorite Rioja producers Señorío de P.Peciña. Yep, it is the "young wine" from the same producer that brought us their outstanding 1998 Gran Reserva and their workhorse 2000 Crianza. The Joven is a blend of 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 2% Garnacha which is fermented and aged completely in stainless steel. On my stop at the winery earlier in the year I found this to be much more spicy and complex than about 99% of the Rioja Joven on the market today. I think one of the reasons is the fact that more of the top level fruit went into the bottling in this particular year. Full of licorice and roasted fennel spice on the nose this becomes both fruity and earthy on the palate. Strawberry, cherry and black currant duke it out with the typical terroir notes of clay and leather. Plus this has none of the fizz or Kool-Aid like flavors that are so commonly associated with Joven. Why? Because no carbonic maceration is used in the making of this wine. (Bryan Brick, K&L)
