2005 Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs Sparkling Wine

SKU #1040029

From the first name in American sparkling wine comes this elegant bubbly from the superb 2005 vintage. Schramsberg's Blanc de Blancs is dry and crisp, using small amounts of malolctic- and barrel-fermented wines in the blend for greater depth and texture. The 2005 growing season allowed for longer hang times on the chardonnay fruit that comprises this wine, drawn from top vineyards in Napa, Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin. The extended time on the vine really concentrated the fruit flavors, letting the grapes develop crisp apple, creamy lemon and tangy pineapple flavors to complement the usual stone fruit and key lime zest. Hints of fresh-baked brioche and toasted hazelnut round out the nose and palate. While this wine would make a great aperitif (Nixon served it at the historic "Toast to Peace" in Beijing in 1972) it has the acidity and structure to help it pair well with shellfish, crudo, curry or roasted chicken and even with the cheese plate at dessert. According to Wine Spectator: "Lush and supple, offering creamy citrus and Asian pear aromas, with nicely layered lemon curd, cinnamon and ginger flavors that build to a light, crisp note. Drink now through 2011." (07/08)

To best describe this wine to you I have to tell you a little secret... I mistook this bottle for Champagne on my sommelier test (not the final exam thank God!). Now, knowing better, I should have noticed by the ripeness of the fruit that this was no Champagne, but oh it was so delicious! Toasty and briochy, with lemon notes and also some tropical fruit and exotic spices. I definetely recommend the Schramsberg.

Varietal:

Chardonnay

- The white grape of Burgundy, and probably the most familiar name to American consumers. In Burgundy, the name of the grape generally does not appear on the label-only the place where it was grown (e.g. Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, etc.). It is also the grape of Chablis, where it's habit of early ripening puts it at risk for Spring freezes and hailstorms. It is responsive to a wide variety of wine-making techniques, and use in Champagne as well. The American style has often been to put Chardonnay fully through a secondary, malolactic fermentation, producing a wine that is often fat and rich. In Burgundy, by contrast, Chardonnay produces white wines of great power, but also of great acidity and crispness. It usually maintains a high level of alcohol, and the tremendous diversity of Chardonnay winemaking styles across the globe make wines from this grape one the most interesting and popular varietals. - When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
