2007 Bodegas Angel Rodriguez Martinsancho Verdejo Rueda, Spain

SKU #1040018

91 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale yellow-gold. Intensely perfumed, complex nose displays fresh lime, grapefruit, anise, herbs and white flowers. Nervy citrus flavors are complicated by thyme, licorice and white pepper, with bracing minerality adding verve. The finish clings tenaciously, repeating the mineral and floral notes. Weightless, precise and impressively persistent, with a filigree quality that is really alluring." (Jul/Aug '08) When I was in Rueda earlier in the year I realized a few things. One was how vigorous the Verdejo vine was, it grows like a weed and produces an amazing amount of fruit, something like 30 or more bunches to a vine. This is simply too much and the great producers like Angel Rodriguez have to be incredibly diligent in the vineyard to cut this crop down and nurture a few bunches rather than a truckload. The other realization came in the way of just how delicious these wines truly were when made correctly. Before I just viewed them as cheap and one-dimensional, this is simply not the case with the Martinsancho. Sweet pea, lime flesh and a floral note similar to a Calla Lily are all present here. Juicy and refreshing, this is chock-full of vibrant citrus fruit and cleansing quartz-like minerality. Perfect for a warm evening or picnic with cured meats, creamy cheeses and crusty bread or for the more adventurous a batch of calamares frito. (Bryan Brick, K&L)

I am a big fan of Verdejo, and the Martin Sancho from Senor Angel Rodriguez is one of the absolute best. Dry and crisp, with distinctive notes of lemongrass, verbena and quince. It is extremely refreshing, yet long and complex enough to certainly make you sit up and take notice.

This wine is ridiculously tasty. I was recently reminded of this by a good customer who came in to let me know that he, too, found this wine to be ridiculously tasty. Here's what I wrote in the July 2008 newsletter: Family owned in Rueda since 1780, Angel Rodriguez continues to make the grand cru of the region. His 60 hectares of 44-year old vines lie on the stoniest, best piece of real estate in the D.O. I was lucky enough to visit the winery and vineyard and it was easily among my favorite winery visits, ever. Fresh, with typical melon and gentle peach flavors, along with minerality and terrific acidity, the 2007 is terrific now and will be even better with several years of bottle age. And since these wines are traditionally vinified, from great raw material, these wines do age. I had a 1981 that was unbelievable, still vibrant, fresh, and deliciously complex. Fans of aged riesling, muscadet, and other lesser known values, take note…
Top Value!

First time trying Verdejo. This is a delicious wine! Just the right amount of acidity, with citrus and mineral, very refreshing.
