One star from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Lightly toasty oak joins concentrated blackberry aromas, sweet spices and hints of roasted vanilla beans in a nose that flirts with late harvest concentration but stays on the mannerly side of the spectrum. Full in body and nominally tannic, but not in the least hard or overbearing, this tasty wine will be just right with savory roasts like port-basted pork loins." (September 2008) This 2006 Napa Zin blends fruit from three old-vine Napa Valley vineyards: Luvisi (planted in 1908), "old" Frediani (1940s) and "new" Frediani (1950s). All three sites are dry-farmed, low-yielding vineyards that contribute complexity and concentration to the blend. This is a lovely zin, with rose petal and black cherry aromas grounded with an earthy, leathery undercurrent. In the mouth the wine is modern and jammy, with briar fruit, currant, cocoa and coffee flavors that carry through to the long finish.
