2005 Bodegas Condado de Haza Tinto Ribera del Duero, Spain

SKU #1039486

93 points, "Highly Recommended" and #34 on the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2008: "This red packs a lot of flavor on a supple frame. Black cherry, blackberry, smoke, mineral and espresso notes show focus and depth, backed by firm but well-integrated tannins that dissolve on a finely etched, floral-scented finish. Drink now through 2018." (10/08) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky violet. Perfumed, pure red and dark berry aromas are brightened by zesty minerality. Taut, youthfully firm raspberry and bitter cherry flavors offer excellent cut and thrust. Finishes with suave tannins and outstanding persistence. Impressively balanced and much more about delicacy and insinuation than power. An understated, elegant wine that really clings to the palate." (Sept/Oct '07) 90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Crianza is purple-colored with an attractive bouquet of cedar, mineral, earth notes, espresso, and blackberry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied wine with ample ripe fruit, a firm structure, good depth, and plenty of flavor. This solid effort should be at its best between 2012 and 2020." (04/08)

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Tempranillo

- The most important red wine varietal for both everyday and world-class Spanish wines. Frequently, the wines made from Tempranillo have aromas of black cherry fruit as well as leather and earthy qualities. Some studies have shown that this varietal is a relative of Pinot Noir. The two most famous areas for great Tempranillo based wines are the Ribera del Duero and the Rioja. In the Duero, the wines are commonly blended with Cabernet and/or Merlot. While in the Rioja it is more frequently blended with Garnacha (Grenache). Here is a list of our bestselling Tempranillo.
Country:

Spain

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
