92 points, a Best Buy and one of Wine & Spirits Year's Best from Austria: "Smoky and stony, this wine takes its time to open, eventually acquiring a richly textured depth of quince, grilled peach and pear-skin aromas. It feels broad and soil-driven, demonstrating a seamless harmony and confident, vivid energy. Decant if you serve it now, or put it in the cellar for another decade..." 90 points Wine Spectator: "Rich and ripe, with flavors of peach, Fuji apple and hints of marzipan. The precise finish of glazed apricot and citrus is long and satisfying. Drink now through 2013." (02/09) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "...Offers a classic nose of lime, cress, and lentil; an irresistibly juicy yellow plum, lemon, and subtly savory, saline palate; and an ultra-refreshing finish with delightful nips of cress and citrus zest. With a shocking sense of complete, luscious ripeness for an early-harvested 2007 wine of low alcohol, this outstanding value shimmers like a bright, dynamic Riesling, but the flavors are archetypal Gruner Veltliner. Enjoy it right away as intended, yes, but I don’t doubt that if you salt a few bottles away for a couple of years their potential will surprise and delight you..." (02/09) Big and rich, this is ample, satisfying and creamy, the kind of Gruner that fills your mouth with yeasty, biscuity richness, though with plenty of underlying acid, too. Great with food or without, this is a fine value from one of Kamptal's finest estates. 11.5% abv

Varietal:

Gruner Veltliner

- Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, making up about a third of all the vineyard land in the country, according to importer extraordinaire Terry Thiese. The varietal has definitely increased in popularity of the past few years, as sommeliers and wine directors loaded their lists with this spicy white because it pairs well with so many things. Its bouquet has been described as floral, tending to toward musky, with hints of peppery greens, lentils, citrus and red fruit with a distinctive mineral quality. In the mouth the wine can be broad or precise, but is almost always distinguished by bracing acidity and flavors that mirror the nose. A notoriously good ager, you can drink GrüVes in their youth, or let them evolve in complexity in your cellar.
Country:

Austria

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure. Click for a list of bestselling items from Austria.
