Delamotte Brut Champagne

SKU #1039012 90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

(50% chardonnay, 30% pinot noir and 20% pinot meunier): Pale yellow. A highly aromatic nose displays orange zest, chamomile, anise and dusty herbs. Fleshy and generous but quite dry, with a bracing quality to the lemon gelato and floral flavors complicated by chalky minerals. This penetrating, dry Champagne finishes with lingering spice and citrus notes. (12/ 2011)

90 points Wine Spectator

A hint of yeasty bread dough accents flavors of pippin apple, smoke, Meyer lemon and stony mineral. Firm and focused, with a raw almond note on the moderate finish. Drink now through 2015. (12/ 2011)

89 points Wine Enthusiast

A wine with good bottle age along with yeasty acidity and a fine citrus character. It is a light style, with just a hint of toast. The acidity is delicious. (7/ 2011)

I had the wonderful opportunity to taste the Delamotte Brut in a blind tasting of six wines, and this stood out as one of my favorites. My notes were riddled with adjectives like zesty, fresh and zippy, which can be attributed to the Le Mesnil Chardonnay fruit. There is also an amazing balance of stone fruit, Meyer lemon and a touch of toast on the finish.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Chardonnay

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mācon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.
