This is from a single parcel of vines that are 60 years old, it is all hand harvested, all organically farmed and aged in stainless steel for 7 months on its lees with some stirring for added richness. Here we have a bottle that can give most Sancerre a run for their money (actually less money) with its distinctive minerality and freshness coupled with effusive aromas of candied citrus, honeydew melon and sweet herbs.

During the warm Summer months I eat and drink a bit lighter and I can't seem to get enough crisp, refreshing whites from the Loir Valley in France. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc from organically farmed 60 year old vines has become my bargain go-to whenever I get together with friends. Costing far less than most good Sancerre, this has gobs of crushed melon, and citrus with vibrant minerality on the finish. This was a huge hit at a recent staff tasting and it wows my friends also.

Carmalized fruit like a sweet apricot marmalade, with hints of grass, citrus and a beautiful river pebble minerality overwhelm the nose of this staff favorite. Love this wine! Hands down, one of the best values in the entire store.

Another solid wine from Merieau. Same Beautiful golden color as the 2006. If you close your eyes, it could easily be a top notch Sancerre. An AMAZING value for a wine that could easily fetch significantly more from Sauv Blanc lovers.

This 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire valley is a star. I love the crisp, invigorating Sancerre-like aromas of citrus and grass, floral notes, and the distinctly crisp, minerally palate. It is a great all-purpose white option for a party or event, as it is food-friendly, balanced, and has enough weight to satisfy most people. AND it is 100% organic and sustainably farmed, made with care by a small producer.

I really, really like this wine. In fact, I am a huge fan of all three wines that K&L carries from this talented winemaker. The 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is plenty dry and crisp, yet with just enough fruity juice to not make your mouth pucker. The Merieau is a great everyday alternative to more expensively priced Sancerre.

I'm super-selective with the 'top value' tag on this review page. While I strongly believe in the existence of value at every price point, I am limiting my top values here to wines under $17 that just really impress. Here is a Touraine that really pops on the palate, with bright, rich citrus flavors and a moderately strong minerality reminiscent of Sancerre. Yet another delicious value from Mr. Loire himself, importer Jon-David Headrick. I plan on drinking a whole lot of this wine, and suspect that anyone who tries it might follow suit.

A rather insipid Sauvignon Blanc, with subdued herbal and mineral notes, and somewhat flat acidity. Perhaps this wine would have been better a year ago? Today it just seemed tired.

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.
