2006 Newton "Unfiltered" Napa Vallay Chardonnay

SKU #1038648

A classic expression of unfiltered Chardonnay; this rich and powerful wine opens with aromas of citrus flowers, coconut, butterscotch and roasted almonds. On the palate the wine combines butter and oak with layers of peach, mango and honey and a touch of mineral on the finish. To fully enjoy the rich intensity of this wine, serve it with simply prepared succulent dishes such as broiled monk fish, braised pork with apples, or salmon with tarragon aioli.

To be brutally honest, I generally do not like California chardonnay's. No how, no way. However, the unfiltered Newton is an exception. This wine is big, big, big! When I tasted it at the vineyard, Su Hua Newton actually served it AFTER the red wines. Very pretty nose of coconuts, almonds and caramel. Luscious in the mouth with golden aplles, butter, oak and honey. Hint of minerality on the finish. This is NOT a flabby, overdone chardonnay. It is a big, fascinating and pleasurable wine. A perfect foil to white meats with spicy overtones. Well done, Su Hua!

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Chardonnay

- The white grape of Burgundy, and probably the most familiar name to American consumers. In Burgundy, the name of the grape generally does not appear on the label-only the place where it was grown (e.g. Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, etc.). It is also the grape of Chablis, where it's habit of early ripening puts it at risk for Spring freezes and hailstorms. It is responsive to a wide variety of wine-making techniques, and use in Champagne as well. The American style has often been to put Chardonnay fully through a secondary, malolactic fermentation, producing a wine that is often fat and rich. In Burgundy, by contrast, Chardonnay produces white wines of great power, but also of great acidity and crispness. It usually maintains a high level of alcohol, and the tremendous diversity of Chardonnay winemaking styles across the globe make wines from this grape one the most interesting and popular varietals. United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Specific Appellation:

Napa Valley

- America's most famous wine region, which encompasses a varied geographical territory running about 20 miles long from the San Francisco Bay northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena. Napa's great diversity, both in terms of climate and terroir, has led to the creation of a number of smaller AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Mount Veeder, among others. Cabernet and chardonnay still reign supreme, but just about everything under the sun is grown in Napa Valley, in quality levels ranging from $2 jug wine to $500 a bottle California cab.
