2007 Blason Cabernet Franc

SKU #1038211

Giovanni Blason and his consulting enologist Andrea Rossi have turned this 37-acre property into a juggernaut of affordable quality wines. Giovanni and his wife Valentina own this winery in Gradisca d’Inzonzo, 3.75 miles from the Slovenian border and about 20 miles north of Trieste. This one is so good you won't believe it! The flavor just bursts out of the glass, spice laden, black pepper, red fruits, vivacious, fresh and curvy all at the same time, and at an unbelievable price. Please try this wine if you haven’t or even if you have had Italian Cabernet Franc.

If you ask Gary Westby about this wine, he'll tell you the story about how he immediately threw down for a case of this stuff after sampling it in our wine bar. While Cab Franc doesn't usually fall into the category of everyday red (generally due to its inaccessibility during its youth), the Blason bottling is loaded with the classic flavors of the grape: juicy red berries, graphite, black pepper and herbal spice; a wonderful expression of the variety by a very talented Italian winemaker.

Cinnamon and I bought a case of this wine- come by and check out our recycling bin and you will see it. I love it with my favorite winter pasta that she makes, a gemelli with bacon, dinosaur kale, garlic, olive oil and a little bit of anchovy. I am convinced that eating this pasta and drinking this north Italian red will make me a faster bike rider- like my northern Italian heroes Gilberto Simoni and Damiano Cunego- so don't try and tell me different! This wine is what I crave on a weeknight, a lighter red with character and refreshing snap, free of overbearing oak and high alcohol. It has a bouquet of herbs that I don't tire of, and I am sure that I will regret not having bought two cases once it is gone!
Drink from 2009 to 2012

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Cabernet Franc

- While Cabernet Franc, a parent with Sauvignon Blanc to the ubiquitous Cabernet Sauvignon, frequently plays second fiddle in Bordeaux blends (though it does get more props on the Right Bank, where it dominates Cheval Blanc), this lighter, higher acid/lower tannin, early-maturing, perfumed red varietal is far from a wallflower. It is the headliner in the Loire Valley appellations of Saumur-Champigny, Bourgueil, St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Chinon and Anjou-Villages, where it makes exceptional, food-friendly wines. Outside of France, Cabernet Franc can be found in northern Italy, particularly in Friuli and in California where it is frequently used as a blending grape in Bordeaux-style wines. Heartier in the cold than Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc is gaining a foothold in northern and eastern wine regions like Canada, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The 1980s showed incredible efforts and a lot of experimentation. The 1990s marked the real jump in consistent quality, including excellence in many Region that had been indistinct for ages.
