2005 Domaine Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte Rôtie (was $89.99)

SKU #1038109

91(+?) points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby. Ripe cherry and candied plum on the nose, with olive and smoky bacon notes adding nuance. Plush, deeply sweet dark fruit preserve flavors are braced by zesty minerality and pick up an exotic floral pastille character with air. Finishes with a strong smoky quality and lingering sweetness. This definitely requires patience." (Jan/Feb 08) 90 points Robert Parker: "The 2005 Cote Rotie needs 5-6 years of bottle age to shed some tannins, as this is a tannic, powerful wine, with a deep ruby/purple color, notes of framboise, some oak, underbrush/forest floor, monster tannins, medium body, but plenty of concentration. It possesses enough power and extraction to stand up to the wine’s structure. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020+?." (02/08) 13% abv.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Shiraz/Syrah

- Syrah is the great red grape of the Northern Rhone, responsible for such fine wines as Hermitage and Cote Rotie. Big, dark and spicy, wines made from this varietal can age as well as Bordeaux. The varietal is gaining popularity in the United States as well as other countries. Since the 1970's, Syrah has spread throughout the Southern Rhone, and Provence regions of France, where it is being bottled as a single varietal wine or in blends. Syrah has also seen tremendous success in Australia where it is commonly called Shiraz (same grape, different name). Brought 'down-under' in the 1830's, Shiraz is widely planted through out Southeastern Australia. The wines range in style from fruity forward wines to big thick port like monsters. Shiraz is also frequently blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Grenache. Here is a list of our bestselling Shiraz/Syrah
Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
