2006 Crozes-Hermitage Blanc, Domaine Belle "Les Terres Blanches" (was $30)

SKU #1038107

This impeccably run family estate is located in the village of Larnage, about 2 miles north of the 300-acre vineyard of Hermitage. Larnage is the closest of the 11 villages that make up the appellation of Crozes-Hermitage. The Belle family farms 18 hectare (54 acres) of vines and 10 hectare (25 acres) of apricots. They were members of the co-op in Tain-Hermitage, but in 1988, after Philippe had completed his education in Montpellier, they began to make their own wine at their new winery. The white varietals are planted just above the famous vineyard of Les Pierrelles which is located below Hermitage and are covered with small calcareous/limestone granite pebbles. The higher elevation allows for a slightly longer growing season due to the cooler zone and the grapes retain wonderful acidity. The average vine age here is 20 years old. The 2006 Blanc is composed of 70% Marsanne & 30% Roussanne. It is 100% destemmed and crafted using a combination of 40% stainless steel, 30% new oak & 30% 1 year-old barrels. It is bottled unfiltered. 13%abv.

The 2006 “Les Terres Blanche” is composed of 70% marsanne and 30% roussanne both from a vineyard planted just above the famous vineyard of Les Pierrelles. The higher elevation here allows for a slightly longer growing season (due to the cooler zone, which endows the grapes with excellent levels of acidity). A combination of 40% stainless steel, 30% new oak and 30% one-year-old barrels are utilized and the wine is bottled unfiltered. This lush, medium-bodied white would make an exceptional accompaniment to smoked duck, scallops, white asparagus or St-Marcellin cheese.

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
