2006 Robert Mondavi Napa Fume Blanc (Was $14)

SKU #1037225

90 points and one star from Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "8% Semillon. If nowhere near as ambitious or complex as the winery's Reserve bottling, this nicely composed and wonderfully well-balanced edition delivers lots of precise melon and fig fruit with sweet oak and deft touches of herbs in its service. Fleshy to start and firm at the finish, it hits the varietal mark smartly and will prove a versatile partner to a wide range of meaty fish and mild chicken dishes." (September 2008) From Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright, pale yellow. Pungently fresh aromas of grapefruit peel and gooseberry. Juicy and firmly built, with brisk flavors of grapefruit, lemon drop and citrus peel. Finishes firm and persistent." (May/June '08) According to the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "8% Semillon. Glimmers of white peach and nectarine join hints of grapefruit and a touch of sweet oak in the nicely composed aromas of this solid young Sauvignon, and there is a good sense of fruit to be found in its flavors. Slightly fleshy on entry, but still on the crisp and angular side at the finish, it should improve a bit in the bottle even while serving well now with simply broiled fish or steamed mussels." Additional Information:

Varietal:

Sauvignon Blanc

- Sauvignon Blanc 34 As the backbone of the delicious Loire Valley wines like Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, Sauvignon Blanc remains a very popular varietal, but is has not seen expansive new plantings in California like Chardonnay. The reality is that in most California viticultural areas, planting Merlot or Cabernet will return more money to the grower. However, there are still some excellent Sauvignon Blanc plots in the golden state, and we're happy that the great Sauvignon Blanc vineyards in California continue to produce this fantastic varietal. Sauvignon Blanc is also extremely popular in Bordeaux, where it is used alone or with Semillon to produce the fine dry and sweet wines in Graves and Sauternes. Here is a list of our bestselling Sauvignon Blanc.
Country:

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. Sub-Region:

California

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Specific Appellation:

Napa Valley

- America's most famous wine region, which encompasses a varied geographical territory running about 20 miles long from the San Francisco Bay northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena. Napa's great diversity, both in terms of climate and terroir, has led to the creation of a number of smaller AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Mount Veeder, among others. Cabernet and chardonnay still reign supreme, but just about everything under the sun is grown in Napa Valley, in quality levels ranging from $2 jug wine to $500 a bottle California cab.
