One of my consistent favorites from d’Arenberg is their d’Arry’s Original, and the terrific 2004 is a super value. A dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by beautiful blackberry, cassis, cherry, and licorice scents with hints of Provencal herbs and pepper in the background. This medium to full-bodied, front end-loaded blend of Shiraz and Grenache possesses considerable fruit, body, and silky tannins as well as enough acidity to provide definition.

Deep, inky ruby. Piercing, vibrant bouquet of bitter cherry, cassis, fruity black pepper, dark chocolate and espresso. Then sweet and lush in the mouth, with ripe but bright red berry flavors and notes of mocha, cracked pepper and violet candy. This offers excellent purity of flavor and a persistent, spicy tone that carries through the finish. A superb combination of earthy, musky and sweet, with medium weight and a chewy, tactile character. Finishes with fine-grained, dusty tannins.

Lithe and spicy, with a mild grip to the texture and a star anise note mingling with the cherry and pomegranate flavors, finishing harmoniously. Best from 2009 through 2015.
